Who Gets Paid The Most In Boutique Consulting Firms?

Have you ever heard of the Jefferson's Bible: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth?

Exactly.

The Bible as it was modified by former US President, Thomas Jefferson, and was completed in 1820, but the readership had been so miniscule that we can't even consider it as a piece of publication.

Apparently, he liked the teachings of Jesus in the Bible but couldn't stand the miracle bits and bobs because they were far too illogical and irrational to him.

So, with the help of a magnifying glass and a razorblade, he cut moral teachings out of the normal Bible and pasted it into a new Bible.

So it became a book of morals without the whole story. What he failed to realise was that people read the Bible because they wanted to read the teachings and the miracles of Jesus together, and separating the two, Jefferson's Bible lost it biblical meaning and value.

I've mentioned this nipple-piercingly interesting event from the not too distant past because in many boutique consultancies compensation for business development can be as messy as Jefferson's Bible.

It seems consulting firm leaders evaluate business development on certain randomly cherry-picked criteria.

I remember working with an IT consulting boutique in 2003 and the firm owner (who considered business development as beneath him) said to the salespeople (all on straight commission), whoever would bring a cashable cheque would get the commission, no one else.

He didn't care who else helped the cheque-collecting person to the point of collecting the cheque. Whoever picked up the check got the money. Of course, talking about complex sales, that was unfair, so it's not surprising that the firm soon went out of business.

And this takes us to the magic question of who makes the most money in your consulting firm?

So, let's take a closer lot at it in this morbidly magnificent episode of Commando Consulting, expertly entitled, Who Gets Paid The Most In Boutique Consulting Firms?

Enjoy!
